Additionally, it offers grants to higher institutions to run EMJM programs, with the goal of attracting top students from developing countries pursuing master’s degrees. Every year, 100 students from around the world receive this funding to study and earn degrees in different universities.

Students under the Erasmus Mundus scholarship will be awarded one of two degrees:

A joint degree

This is a single degree issued by at least two higher education institutions.

Multiple degrees

A candidate can earn two or more degrees from two higher education institutions.

Applicants can decide their preferred degree type when they sign a study agreement with the relevant Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s at the beginning of their studies. 

Eligibility criteria for the Erasmus Mundus scholarship

To be eligible for the Erasmus Mundus scholarship, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Must have a bachelor’s degree (first degree) or be in your last year of bachelor studies to graduate before the master’s program starts
  • First degree must be equivalent to 180 credits or 180 ECTS from an internationally recognized institution.
  • Have a conditional or unconditional offer from the chosen university.
  • Not a former recipient of a scholarship under this program
  • Have not studied for more than 12 months in one of the programs or partner countries over the past five years. Those who have will be considered as applicants from one of the program countries
  • Be a resident of an eligible country
  • Strong academic record
  • A minimum of two years of work experience in a preferred field
  • Applicants from non-English speaking countries must show proof of English proficiency through a TOEFL or IELTS test or a minimum of English language B/English 6 at upper secondary level
  • Meet the eligibility criteria from your preferred university and master’s program

What are the benefits of the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship?

Here’s a breakdown of the scholarship payment

Plan one

€1400 per month for two years without travel or installation payment.

Plan two

Three advance payments of €1000 to help with visa travel and the installation course, paid at three specific times.

€1000 will be paid to the existing bank in the August account before the end of the first semester.

€1000 will be paid in May (end of year one).

€1000 will be paid in September (start of year two).

After these deductions from the student’s general award, students will receive a monthly subsistence of €1275 for the two-year study period.

Duration

EMJMD programs last one to two academic years (60, 90, 120 ECTS credits). The scholarships cover the study period, classes, research, thesis writing, and defence.

Start your research early

First, visit the Erasmus Mundus Catalogue on the official commission website to discover available programs. This is where you should select programs that align with your academic background. You can apply for three eligible programs in one application cycle.

Check the eligibility and admission requirements

Make sure you meet the complete requirements of your preferred programs.

Gather the required documents

Missing out on one document can ruin your application. Therefore, you must assemble the required documents on the scholarship website beforehand. Here’s a list of documents to attach to your application.

Mandatory

  • Certified copy of high school/secondary school certificate
  • First degree certificates (bachelor’s degree)
  • Complete academic transcripts
  • Language proficiency test results (IELTS or TOEFL)
  • A letter of motivation showcasing the applicant’s ability to write in a clear and concise manner
  • Copy of a valid passport or ID
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) / Resume
  • Self-declaration of residence

Not mandatory
