Commonwealth scholarships for masters program

You can apply for this scholarship as an international student. It allows a master’s program in the fields of all subjects available at UK universities.

Benefits

The scholarship covers the following:

  • Full coverage of tuition fees agreed upon between the UK University and the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC)
  • Return airfare from your home country to the UK.
  • A monthly stipend of living allowance of £1, 378 or £1,690 for your study period
  • Child allowance for single parents
  • Warm clothing allowance
  • Disability support

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for any Commonwealth Scholarships for the Master program, you must be:

  • A permanent resident in the eligible common-wealth country
  • Have a refugee status in an eligible commonwealth country.
  • Hold an upper second class(2:1) honors standard or lower class degree with relevant postgraduate qualifications.
  • Demonstrate inability to afford UK study without the scholarship.
  • Disabled applicants who do not meet requirements can demonstrate their potential for international development and may receive a nomination through the Commonwealth Disabled People’s Forum nominator.

 

How to apply for Commonwealth Scholarships

The application for the 2025/2026 academic year is now open. Apply through the CSC’s online application system and submit all the required documents through the:

  • National nominating agencies in eligible the Commonwealth country
  • Selected NGOs and charitable organizations that participate in the scholarship program

Also note that the CSC does not accept a direct application for these scholarships and you may have additional eligibility criteria through the selection process.

Required documents for Commonwealth scholarships for master’s application

  • Proof of citizenship in an eligible country
  • Full transcripts of all your higher education qualifications, including current courses
  • Reference letters from at least two individuals are to be uploaded in PDF format.
  • All applications will be ineligible if the required documents are submitted after the closing date.

The Commonwealth Scholarships Coverage

The scholarship covers:

  • Airfare
  • Tuition fees
  • Warm clothing allowance
  • A study travel grant
  • Child allowance for single-parent
  • Disabled individuals would receive a full assessment for additional financial support.

Commonwealth Scholarships for PhD degree

The applicants for phD scholarships must come from vulnerable states and least-developed countries. This is as classified by the Development Assistant Committee (DAC) for the full-time doctorate program in the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in a UK university.

This sponsorship operates within the framework of the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship plan.

To apply for this program, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be a British citizen or have been granted a refugee by a commonwealth country.
  • Or you are a permanent resident in an eligible commonwealth country
  • You’re unable to study in the UK without this scholarship
  • You must not be registered for an MPhil leading to a PhD, or PhD at any UK university or in their home country before the scholarship application date
  • Provide all the supporting documents in the required format
  • Be available to start academic studies by the start of the UK academic year in September 2025

The Nomination procedure

It’s important to note that the CSC does not accept direct applications for these scholarships, all applicants must apply through a nominator whose duty is to forward an agreed number of candidates to the CSC for consideration.

Three types of nominators approved in the phD program are:

  • National nominating agency
  • Selected non-governmental organizations and charitable bodies.
  • Selected universities and university bodies

To start with, you will have to upload some necessary documents with the application such as:

  • A full transcript detailing all higher education qualifications, including courses currently being studied with translations into English.
  • Reference from two individuals in PDF format, signed on the institution’s letterhead clearly showing the sender’s details.
  • Adding a supporting statement in PDF signed on an email or a letterhead clearly showing the sender’s details.
