The History of Burger King Scholarships
The Burger King Scholarship was originally overseen by the “Have it Your Way” Foundation, which later was renamed to McLamore Foundation in honor of James McLamore, Burger King’s co-founder.
Also, McLamore co-founded the company in 1957 and continued serving as the president and board member until 1976. The scholarship program then began in 1996, two years after his passing under the Have It Your Way Foundation.
In 2005, the McLamore Foundation was established to manage various philanthropic efforts for Burger King, supported by donations from customers, employees, and franchisees.
While James McLamore valued integrity, entrepreneurship, education, citizenship, and high standards, it gave birth to Burger King Scholarship principles. However, the officially called the Burger King Scholars Program was commonly referred to as the Burger King Scholarship.
Furthermore, the Burger King Scholarships awards college scholarships ranging from $1000 to $50,000. And for the 2022 school year, awarded over 4000 Burger King scholarships totaling $4.6 million.
Although the awards vary each year, the window for the scholarship application runs from October to December of the year before the prize. Additionally, 93 Burger King student employees are usually awarded $1000 scholarships while $27 are awarded $5000 scholarships.
The Burger King McLamore Foundation administers the BK family funds to provide hardship assistance grants to Burger King employees in their time of need. Since the inception of the BK Family Fund, it has awarded more than $1 million in hardship grants to BK families worldwide. Unlike the Burger King Scholars program, The BK Family Fund administers funds in many more countries around the world including Italy, China, Brazil, Argentina, and others.
